4 things you need to know about chipped windscreens

           1. Chipped windscreens don’t always need replacement

You’re driving along minding your own business, when *CRACK*, a small rock is flicked up off the road by the vehicle in front. The end result is normally a small star shaped crack or a bulls eye mark, in the top layer of glass of your windscreen. It quite often can look worse than it actually is – so don’t assume that the glass needs replacing at this point.

           2. Don’t leave a chip repair too late

Left untreated the damage will usually develop into a long crack. A long crack cannot be repaired. However if caught early enough, the minor damage in the glass can be fixed through a very straight forward process of injecting acrylic resin directly into the damage, then curing the resin under a high frequency ultraviolet lamp.

           3. It isn’t a waste of time

A chip repair will save you time and money (if you had to wait for the glass to be replaced, then wait for the car to be safe to drive again, typically you’re looking at 2-3 hours of wasted time). A typical windscreen can be repaired in around half an hour and you can drive the car straight away.

           4. You’ll save a wad of cash

By repairing the crack, rather than waiting until the glass needs replacing, you’ll save around $200 against the cost of having to replace the entire windscreen. If you have comprehensive car insurance with glass repair and replacement cover, you can usually recover the cost of our service from your insurer. All leading insurance companies fully support repair and will reimburse your costs upon presenting a legitimate invoice from a certified and licensed company like us.

How NOT to replace a car windscreen

In my time as a auto glazier, I’ve helped many unfortunate customers with previous windscreen repair/replacement jobs that have been of a substandard quality.

I’ve seen some operators cut corners by:

Using substandard resin to repair windscreen cracks..

Using poor quality sealant – resulting in leaky windscreens..

Using cheap, inferior quality glass when replacing windscreens..

Not allowing a repair to set properly before leaving a job, saving themselves time but risking reoccurance of your original problem.

Take a look at the photo on the right. This is a prime example of what I’m talking about. Whoever has carried out this windscreen ‘replacement’ has scratched the paintwork and failed to apply primer to the aperture, which over time has caused major rust issues.

A ‘cheap’ windscreen repair or replacement not only puts your safety at risk when driving, it also means you’ll probably end up with your hand in your pocket when the job needs to be done all over again.

As the owner/operator of Perth Windscreens, I believe the job should be done correctly the first time. I only use the highest quality, reliable materials when repairing or replacing your windshield. Plus, I stand behind the workmanship of every repair/replacement I carry out with a lifetime satisfaction guarantee.

If you have an auto glass problem, give me a call. I’ll provide you with an

How to protect your windscreen this summer

As a windscreen repairman, it’s always a busy time of year during the WA summer.

High daily temperatures here in beautiful Perth mean that windscreens are at much higher risk of cracking and needing replacement.

I have one simple trick for all WA motorists to remember this summer.

Do not, under any circumstances put cold water onto a boiling hot windscreen.

The sudden change in temperature will cause any existing damage in the glass to crack out, rendering the windscreen unrepairable and requiring replacement.

It’s really important to get a chipped windscreen repaired, as it will save you the money and the inconvenience of having to replace the whole windscreen.

I have a lot of prospective customers ask me – does windscreen repair work? Does it save you money and time?

In a nutshell – yes it does. Quite often I can repair a chipped windscreen inside an hour and have you back on your way again.

If you have glass cover on your auto insurance policy, I can even bill your insurance directly, which means you’re not even out of pocket.

If you notice a chip in your windscreen, please give me a call. I will come to your location and repair it professionally, often for much less than what the national windscreen companies will charge you.

5 Common Reasons Your Windscreen Cracks

Having a cracked windscreen in Australia is more than just a hassle. Depending on the size of the crack you may be on the wrong side of the law. If it affects your visibility, then it is illegal and if you are stopped by the cops then it’s a ticket and a defect notice. Even a small hairline crack on the drivers side can grow into something much bigger and when it gets to thirty millimeters, you are in trouble. A crack from the edge of your windscreen that is seventy five millimeters long or a bullseye crack up to sixteen millimeters wide and you are in trouble.

           How Did It Happen.

When a crack appears on our windscreens we usually don’t know how it happened. This is frustrating because if we knew, we could maybe take steps to avoid it in the future. If your windscreen is damaged, you need to get it fixed by a professional. This way you are assured that everything will be done right and the car or truck will pass all necessary roadworthy and safety checks. Let’s take a look at some of the more common reasons why windscreens crack.

It’s Just Too Hot or Cold

            – It’s Australia guys and the temperatures here can get really high and really cold. If you remember your science classes in school, you will know that things expand when they get hot and contract when they get cold. This surely causes stress to your windscreen and this continuous growing and shrinking will weaken your windscreen over time. Who hasn’t jumped into a freezing cold car or ute and put the heater up to the maximum. It’s warm on the inside which is great, but outside it’s still freezing cold and this puts pressure on your windscreen that may cause a crack.

             Stone chips or Loose Gravel

             – Roadworks are a continuous thing in Australia as we try to make our roads safer. However, this continuous work means gravel and dust accumulating on our highways. If you are sitting right behind a car or a large truck then in all likelihood, small stones are going to be fired up striking your paintwork but also your windscreen. It only needs to be a little crack to later grow into a large one. In the event you experience a large crack that will impede your driving, it is best to get a tow from a reliable company like

            https://www.executivetowingservices.com.au/

, who are reasonably priced. We all know parking the car in the shade protects the paintwork and out first choice is parking under the protection of a tree. This tree however, may have fruit, nuts and small animals and birds and if anything falls, it’s going to strike your windscreen. That cute squirrel might end up costing you money.

             Sunlight

            – You really can’t win. If you park your car in the shade of a tree it might get a damaged windscreen and if you park it in direct sunlight, the same might occur. The best advice we can give is to try to find a well shaded area or get yourself a windscreen cover.

             Pressure

            – Driving your car really fast or placing objects on the windscreen can cause cracks. We have all laid back on our windscreens and looked up at the sky and while it is really comfortable, your weight on the windscreen may cause it damage.

            Poor Installation

             – Always get your car repaired by a proper professional. The slightest mistake in lining up the windscreen or incorrect sealing means that you have a structurally unsound windscreen and will most likely get a crack.

There is only so much you can do to protect your windscreen, but if you follow these handy tips, then hopefully you and your windscreen will be together for a long time. Be careful, vigilant and give the guys above a call, if it’s just too unsafe to drive home. Happy Motoring.

The law in Australia is clear on this. If you have a cracked windscreen and it impedes your ability to drive, then you are driving on the roads unlawfully. But what is deemed as unroadworthy and what is acceptable? It is easy just to just forget about a little crack and continue on. Getting a ticket might be the worst that can happen, but if you talk to experienced safety people and the cops, then they will disagree. The perils of driving with a windscreen like this can be very serious and possibly life threatening.

           Who You Gonna Call?

It is important, therefore, to have your windscreen checked by a qualified vehicle inspector and there really is not a better place to do it than with these guys,

           https://www.spotonvehicleinspections.com.au/

Not only will they check your windscreen, they will check the whole car for a fixed price and quality assurance is guaranteed. They have the latest technology that will scan your on-board computer and identify issues that need looking at.

           It’s Simple Physics.

You may think that the purpose of a windscreen is just so you can see what’s coming towards you, but it’s more than that. In the event of a road traffic accident, the windshield assists with the transferring of the force incurred from getting hit in the front, down towards the chassis. It helps protect you and your passengers. If the windscreen has a small crack and it shatters due to the crash, then you are much more likely to get hurt.

           Support Where You Need It.

In the event that you are involved in a serious accident and your car rolls, then the windscreen provides additional support that will stop the roof from being pushed in around you and your family. If there is a slight crack in your windscreen then that affects it’s integrity and if it shatters, then there is nothing stopping the roof from crushing you.

           Stay In The Car.

What about when you haven’t buckled up as you should? If a crash takes place, your windscreen keeps you from being ejected from the car. If there is a crack, then the windscreen is more likely not to hold up to the impact and you will be thrown from the car onto the road. Whatever is coming the other way is going to hit you and if you have survived the impact, then this is one more thing to worry about.

           Airbag Safety.

The effective use of an airbag relies on the fact that your windscreen acts as a backstop, so that the airbag is pushed towards you and your passengers. There is a sequence involved here and if your windscreen breaks into pieces due to a crack, then you or your passenger are not getting the protection it was intended for. The force of the bag deploying, will push on the windscreen and if it isn’t strong enough, then the bag will push through it.

           Best Advice.

If you are driving with a cracked windscreen, you really need to get it checked and replaced today. Don’t leave it until tomorrow as we don’t know what is to come and an accident can happen at any time. Why risk your life and the lives of your family. Go get it checked today.
